China Building Materials Academy Co., Ltd. (CBMA), the first scientific institution in building materials field of China, affiliated to China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd. (CNBM), was founded in October 1950. As the largest comprehensive research, development and design institute in China, CBMA, acclaimed as the "cradle and birthplace of new China's building materials science and technology", has achieved a number of groundbreaking successes in the history of China's building materials science and technology. In 1999, it was restructured into a state-owned enterprise. In 2004, it is strategically reorganized with China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd. and became a large-scale national scientific research institution in the field of inorganic non-metallic materials in China.
CBMA has established the research and innovation system centered on “strengthening enterprise with science and technology” . CBMA takes possession of 8 national, ministerial and provincial-level laboratories, 27 national, ministerial and provincial-level engineering technology research centers, 35 national industry quality inspection centers, 7 national technical committees for standardization as well as 5,000 scientific researchers. CBMA is among the first group of institutes (Inorganic Non-Metals Major in Materials Science) authorized by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council to award Master’s degree and doctorate. Post doctoral station has also been established in the Academy. CBMA has undertaken more than 3,650 national-level research projects, among which about 1,200 national, provincial & ministerial and higher level awards have been granted by the government, has formulated and revised more than 19 international standards as well as 1,400 national and industrial standards, and obtained over 4,000 authorized patents. Breakthroughs have been achieved in a large number of "bottleneck" technologies, and a large number of new technologies and materials have been used in major national projects, becoming an important national strategic scientific and technological force in the field of inorganic non-metallic materials in China.
CBMA focuses on developing strategic emerging industries, aiming to new industries in seven major areas including key materials for integrated circuits, low-carbon building materials, advanced composite materials, refractory materials, new energy materials and equipment, new materials, and high-tech services for comprehensive layout of strategic emerging industries. It holds 2 listed companies, arranges 2 companies to be listed on the Science and Technology Innovation Board, creating an industrialized capital platform, improving core competitiveness around value creation, enhancing core functions around serving national strategies, and strengthening new development momentum.
CBMA actively implements the international development strategy of technology empowerment, with 8 international cooperation platforms, including the Green Building Materials International Cooperation Base of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Asian Cement and Concrete Research Institute.
